FDA Information

Etidronate was first approved by the FDA in 1977.

Nevertheless, FDA-approval of etidronate for the treatment of osteoporosis has been denied twice, first in 1991 and again in November 1994 - osteoporosis remains an off-label use for this medication.

On the other hand, generic oral etidronate tablets were first approved by the FDA in January 2003. However, as of March 2005, Didronel IV® has been discontinued from manufacture by MGI Pharma in the U.S.
